Elodea densa, also known as the Common Waterweed or Egeria densa, is a versatile aquatic plant that thrives in both aquariums and ponds. Originally native to North and South America, it has spread to various regions worldwide due to its adaptability and rapid growth.

In the wild, Elodea densa can be found in freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams. It has submerged growth, with long, branching stems covered in whorls of dark green, needle-like leaves. Its fine texture and vibrant colour make it an appealing choice for aquascaping and naturalizing ponds.

Caring for Elodea densa in an aquarium is relatively simple. It prefers moderate to high lighting conditions, achieved with fluorescent or LED lights. The water temperature should be maintained between 60°F (15°C) and 78°F (25°C), with a neutral pH level (around 7). This plant can absorb nutrients from the water column, but it benefits from regular supplementation with liquid fertilizers or root tabs. Pruning may be required to control its growth and prevent overcrowding.

In a pond, Elodea densa provides numerous benefits. It helps to maintain water clarity by absorbing excess nutrients, reducing the risk of algae blooms. It also serves as a natural oxygenator, releasing oxygen into the water, benefiting fish and other aquatic organisms.
